Mazda UK continues to hold a majority share of the non-premium sports car – or S segment – at 21 per cent thanks to the popularity of Mazda's revolutionary sports coupe RX-8 and steady sales of the world's most popular roadster Mazda MX-5 ahead of the new model launch at the end of the year.

April saw Mazda RX-8 sales exceed 12,700 since its launch and around 170 for the month. Meanwhile Mazda MX-5 remains steady at just over 500 units for April and 1,800 year to date.

Mazda RX-8 carved a new market for family car buyers from launch in 2003 with its flexible four seater, four-door functionality, while Mazda MX-5 continues to be a motoring icon for true roadster lovers 15 years since its introduction to the UK.

Jeremy Thomson marketing director for Mazda commented on their appeal: "Mazda MX-5 has always been an icon as far as open-top motoring is concerned and continues its appeal 15 years on thanks to its excellent handling, performance and excellent residual values.

"Mazda RX-8 has changed the face of the sports car market in the UK. It brings real motoring excitement to everyday family life.

"Given the choice between a standard family saloon or a unique sports car with generous room for children, many customers with families are now choosing Mazda RX-8 to add some excitement to the school run and the supermarket trip thanks to the sporty coupé’s unique practicality!" enthused Thomson.

Mazda6 sales were yet again the highest volume model for Mazda with over 1,300 units sold in April, bringing the total sold since launch in 2002 to over 42,000 units.

Mazda6 has won over 20 UK awards since its launch for its stunning styling, outstanding driving dynamics, superb engines and driving enjoyment and recently won Best Used Family Car by Used Car Buyer magazine and was ranked as eighth best car in Top Gear Magazine's customer satisfaction survey.
